An Insiders Guide to the Licensing Process
"I've got this idea and I want you to sell it for me to the toy industry..."

Perhaps you have been thinking about licensing your product or idea. Rehtmeyer, Inc. specializes in the licensing of toys, games, juvenile and entertainment products and we work with all the major toy and game companies both in the US and overseas.

We meet with all the major and most mid-sized and smaller toy, game and juvenile product companies for the purpose of offering new product concepts for license. Toy companies come to Rehtmeyer, Inc. for the next "Tickle-Me-Elmo", "Trivial Pursuit", or "Furby". We see each company frequently and have an ongoing need for dynamic products to represent.

Inventors are an important element in the toy industry. Truly unique and exciting products are the challenge to find. Both product ideas as well as finished and produced products offer potential licensing opportunities, provided these products offer a high degree of innovation, play value, consumer appeal and overall product excitement.

Not all products have to be the next frantic trend. The toy industry must annually replace products in all categories to refresh their product line. This creates licensing opportunities in all categories of game and toy from the more traditional to the most cutting edge.

How does licensing work?
Realistic time frame to license:
The timing of a product depends upon many things including the date of presentation, complexity of the product and internal plans and timing of the toy company who wishes to license your concept. While it is possible to license a product on the very first presentation, most products are shown as many as six or more times before they are chosen for licensing by a given company. Each company that requests further study of your product after our meeting with them, will spend several weeks or more testing, reviewing and considering your product further. Should a company "pass" on your concept, it can be shown to another. Duplicate copies of the same concept can expedite the toy company review process by allowing your concept to reach a number of companies at the same time. We typically expect a 12 to 18 month time frame from a products first presentation until it is licensed.

Realistic Time Frame to Product Introduction...
Most companies allow 18 months for a product to be introduced. Smaller companies can typically act more quickly than larger ones, and companies who have an "emergency" product replacement need can exceed expectations. Toy companies need time to design, develop, test, manufacture, ship and sell. The typical selling season for the toy industry (to the retailers) is the last quarter in a given year through the first quarter of the next year. The toy industry is heavily "season" based with as much as 90 percent of all sales realized in the forth quarter (Christmas). Products are typically shipped in October.

The odds:
We estimate that approximately one in every 100 products shown will actually enter into a license agreement. Things to keep in mind when considering a product concept: Toy and game companies look for new and innovative concepts. Originality is what gets the greatest attention!

How Rehtmeyer, Inc. works with inventors:

1. Products must be submitted for an internal review. We will request to represent products, upon completion of internal review, that are deemed marketable and will submit an Agent Agreement form for your review and execution.

2. There is no fee for agent representation. Rehtmeyer, Inc. earns a share of the royalty (as negotiated by you) from the toy company directly.
